The Pick of the Week: Boston Summer First Arts Weekend
Boston’s first summer arts weekend will take place from Friday, July 27 to Sunday, July 29, 2012 at Copley Square. The Plaza will be transformed into the focal point for the festivities. WGBH and The Boston Globe have teamed up to create this weekend and to bring to the city local and national artists. Presented by Citizens Bank, these free events will have a dynamic variety of musical genres including jazz, blues, pop, Celtic, folk, classical and kids music. There will also be Boston theatres and street performers. Special events will also come alive at the Copley Club after 10:30 p.m. The Handel and Haydn Society with special guests will be kick off Sunday’s events with a Baroque brunch at the Copley Fairmont Hotel.
Performers such Irma Thomas, the soul queen of New Orleans will sing as well as Del McCoury; Sharon Shannon with Irish/Celtic music celebrating Celtic legends; Trumpeter Alison Balsom will bring her take on classical music; The Low Anthem will play folk-inspired indie pop; The Preservation Hall Jazz Band with energize the audience with its rhythm, and Suzanne Vega who broke onto the music scene in the 1980s with hits like “Luka.” will perform her new music in an intimate, club atmosphere. Also part of the program is a special chidren treat with Flooky and the Beans.
Food vendors will be on hand but also local restaurants and pubs will participate by offering discounts and specials for the festival.
