New England Conservatory: First Monday at Jordan Hall
Leon Kirchner’s opera, Lily (a musical adaptation of Saul Bellow’s novel Henderson, the Rain King), in a version for chamber ensemble of 11 players, voice, and electronics. Performers include Diana Hoagland, the soprano who sang on the 1973 recording as well as several instrumentalists from that recording – Richard Stoltzman, clarinet; James Buswell, violin; and Lesser himself. The rest of the ensemble features: Christopher Watford, bassoon; Jaclyn Rainey, French horn; Dimitri Murrath, viola; Sooyun Kim, flute; Benjamin Fox, oboe; Joel Fan, piano; Sarah Bob, celeste; and Robert Schulz, percussion.
In this Civil War sci-fi musical, the Union soldier Julian Munro and the brilliant mathematician Ada Lovelacetranscend time to invent an omnipotent steam-powered brain. Blending American indie-folk music with dreams of invention, Futurity explores a world where utopia seems within reach.

Boston Symphony Orchestra: Brahms – A German Requiem
Brahms’s largest work, originated following Robert Schumann’s attempted suicide in 1854 and also connected with the death of his own mother. Christoph von Dohnányi and the Tanglewood Festival Chorus are joined by English-Austrian soprano Anna Prohaska in her BSO debut and the young German bass-baritone Hanno Müller-Brachmann.
